(This inhuman place makes human monsters. This inhuman place)

Speechless. Barely know what to write (although I'll try). Just impeccable. I was immediately drawn in by the writing style, the characters, the setting, the psychological implications of various experiences, history. I love the movie for its ambiguity and thriller style but I EQUALLY love this book for its introspectiveness, its attention to detail, its story. I just...am a little lost for words. I just love it as a character study, about what our past can do to us in the future. I loved the paranormal aspects, the motif of the party and the masks. Brilliant! The breakdown of a family unit, the jealousy and heartbreak that can come from being loved. SO bloody great. I love the ending of the movie and I was kind of disappointed when I knew that that wasn't going to happen in the book BUT I was rewarded with a beautifully moving little moment that genuinely brought me to tears. Stephen King really did something here! And he wrote it so lovingly and/or so grotesquely too. Very excited to get more into King. I'm kind of intrigued by Doctor Sleep as a sequel (I mean the book never needed a sequel I don't think and neither did the movie - I've seen the Doctor Sleep movie but I barely remember it so I would be willing to give the book a go).

The amount of racial slurs in this book are incredible,  at some points there's one on every page. It's annoying and completely unnecessary.  A white man has no business using the n word that many times.  It's not even to make the reader dislike the character that says them, they're said by the protagonists too. Other than that the book was good but that really got under my skin.

Stephen King's masterpiece...if he didn't feel it was necessary to use racist slurs every five seconds that in no way enriched the plot. If he can fully pull Rage out of print, he should also be willing to yank the harmful language from his books. It's would be so easy to express the violence and hatred of the hotel without using anti-black slurs. Disappointed but not surprised.

And someone please give this man a course in how to write women. I'm so tired.

What a gripping tale of psychological torture meets Stranger Things demons. I loved this story. The characters are so detailed! I had to keep reminding myself that these were not actual people! Maybe it's because I'm a psychiatric nurse, but I wasn't scared of this book in the same way that traditional horror makes me scared. This book made me think and linger on the story long after I had put it down for the day. Throughout the story, I kept reflecting on the psychiatric back story of Jack Torrence and I could understand how someone so broken could come to answer to such a powerful demon like the hotel. All and all, I think another masterpiece from Mr. King.
