A slow and long-winded read that is nothing special. This was actually the first time I've read Stephen King and have never seen the entire Shining movie. It was a book club read, and I was not expecting so much endless rambling in this book. The majority of it is psychoanalysis and history for each character. Some parts are sexualized in a disturbing (and sometimes preverted) way. This would have been a DNF for me if it weren't for book club; I got so genuinely sick of "unmask, unmask." It was repeated so often it felt like King was just trying to achieve a certain word count.  And, as other reviews have mentioned, the offensive language/slurs were gross. It was overall boring, and thus difficult for my mind not to wander to literally anything else. I ended up listening on 1.75x speed (which I never do) just to get it done and over with.

I didn’t find it incredibly scary, definitely eerie.

Interesting book and I like the way it ended.  I liked Jacks character and how he struggled with alcoholism and his temper, the mother Wendy, is a submissive woman who only thinks of her child. She strives to be completely different from her own mother who she detests. Danny is an interesting character trying to understand the world around him with his “shining” abilities. Lastly we need to protect Dick Hollorann. He’s the type of friend everyone needs. Just call and he will be there.

Stephen King is the master of horror for a reason and this book is one of those reasons. The book is usually better than the movie and this book is no exception. While the movie does a good job of showing the effects of extended isolation, the book makes you feel it. You feel like you’ve been stuck in a huge hotel for months by yourself. You can sympathize with Jack because we see he is someone who truly wants to do right by his family and he’s trapped in a set of tragic circumstances. All in all, I truly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to start the sequel.
