This is a class on writing, taught by Saunders by analyzing short stories by nineteenth century Russian novelists. I loathed the short stories themselves, both for their patriarchy and because they were, well, boring. But Saunders’s explanations about the authors’ technique and decision-making changed my perspective and helped me recognize more of the technical skill that goes into a short story.

Fantastic!! Funny, thought-provoking. Learned a lot about these Russian stories and writing. So far favorite book of the year. Saunders writes like you’re talking with your smartest friend. I laughed out loud multiple times.
