I loved this book. I had read many of the stories before but I think anyone who loves to read would enjoy following George Saunders commentary on these iconic authors. Highly recommend.

enjoyed the stories a lot more than the analysis chapters, but there was still plenty of good stuff in the analysis - just a bit too much. the Tolstoy stories are magnificent.

I’m surprised at how much I loved this book. It was not a quick read for me, but, by nature of the format, I was able to easily return to it each time. I enjoyed the short stories, but It was Saunders’ afterthoughts that were the heart of the book.

I adored this book. I read it slowly over several months and also listened to on Audible. I love George Saunders voice and his guest readers also. I felt like I took a George Saunders graduate class. I was honored to read this book. The Russian short stories are amazing and even better for Saunders descriptions and explanations about what the authors are doing.

Pure excellence, in many forms.

Amazing. A bit scary but generous too.
