It wasn't until well past the half way point in this book that it dawned on me that Evenson might not be inventing this comic on which he based this critique. My nearly complete lack of knowledge in the world of Graphic Novels and comics didn't help. So I decided to let the entire piece be a universe unto itself - there might exist Ed the Happy Clown or Yummy Fur comic series beyond this critical work; I'd just prefer to let them exist to me through the Evenson lens. Fans of Jorge Luis Borges will understand where I'm coming from on this (Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, for example).

Evenson tackles meaty subjects on the creative act (revising old work, knowing when to end, what is a major / minor story). He explores the difference between comic strips, comic books, graphic-novels, Graphic Novels. I love how he dives into the difference between comic books and graphic novels (and investigating why the creator of Yummy Fur puts a hyphen between graphic and novel). The interview in the Appendix is great - and since I read this as all fabrication, thinking of the discussion between Evenson and creator Chester Brown as imaginative added another layer of fun.
