I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a romance novel (...or really anyone, actually.)
Technically this book is shelved as a romance novel when I purchased it, but this is more of a comedy/fiction "who-don-it." Honestly, I was just frustrated the entire time at the stories happening in this book. The pacing was not great in this book. It was trying to set itself up for this major twist at the end, but in reality it felt like you just didn’t really get enough info the entire book and then were fire-hosed with it at the end.
I tried reading it, put it down, then picked it back up and then almost quit a second time. If I wasn't stubborn and refuse to stop a book halfway through, I would have just left it unread.

Tja - das ging flott los, um dann in der Mitte ziemlich durchzuhängen, und gegen Ende hat es wieder etwas angezogen, so dass es ganz knapp noch für 4 Sterne (naja, 3,8 vielleicht) gereicht hat. Dieses ist definitiv das schwächste Buch von denen, die ich bisher von der Autorin gelesen habe (die Sache mit dem Auto hab ich mir gleich gespart). Vielleicht hätte es mir besser gefallen, wenn ich es auf Englisch gelesen hätte? Vor allem bei "The Flatshare" hat mir auch der Sprachwitz sehr gefallen, vielleicht ist der in der Übersetzung verloren gegangen?
Aber zu den Details: Was hat mir gut gefallen? Der Plot war clever gemacht, wir treffen alle drei Hauptfiguren am Valentinstag, an dem ihr Date nicht auftaucht - wie sich schnell herausstellt, ist das der gleiche Mann. Abwechselnd wird erzählt, was Joseph mit den drei Frauen unternimmt, und wie die drei zusammenhängen, wird im letzten Drittel des Buches für mich überraschend, aber schlüssig aufgelöst. Auch die Nebenfiguren haben mir sehr gefallen: Siobhans Freundinnen, Melissas Schwestern oder Janes Arbeitskollegen im Charity Shop.
Was hat mir also nicht gefallen? Einige Rezensenten haben angemerkt, dass drei Hauptfiguren vielleicht ein bissle viel wären, so dass für das Erzählen der einzelnen Geschichte zu wenig Zeit bleibt - ja, kann sein. Außerdem mochte ich Siobhan so überhaupt nicht leiden, sie ist allerdings für die Auflösung der Geschichte sehr wichtig, man hätte sie nicht weglassen können, mit Melissa hätte die Geschichte so nicht funktioniert. Am liebsten mochte ich Jane, über sie hätte ich gerne mehr erfahren. Und Melissas Geschichte hätte auch als Einzelgeschichte funktioniert, dann hätte man auch ihrem Job als Baumpflegerin und ihren Kollegen da mehr Raum geben können.
Außerdem hatte das Buch in der Mitte ziemliche Längen für mich - alle Figuren sind vorgestellt, dann wird noch ewig rumgeeiert, bis es zur Auflösung kommt - hätte man schneller machen können. Das Ende- vor allem die Geschichte von Jane und Joseph - hat mir dann aber wieder gut gefallen. Wie gesagt, insgesamt hat es für 3,8 von 5 Sternen gerreicht - ganz ok. Wenn Du noch kein Buch der Autorin gelesen hast, fang aber nicht mit diesem an, ich würde "The Flatshare" empfehlen. Werde ich weitere Bücher von ihr lesen? Ja, wohl schon - aber vielleicht auf wieder auf Englisch?

Too many characters and too many scenarios. Not bad, just not for me. I was having trouble remembering who is who, but I always do.

I like that you’re never quite sure what is going on but that you feel you have to keep reading to find out. Especially liked the tree surgeon bits. Also lots of mentions of pancakes which is always a good thing.

This is, hands-down, my favorite adult fiction book so far this year, and I've read some excellent ones. I requested the eGalley copy from NetGalley thinking I was getting a rom-com, and while there definitely is romance as well as some humor, this book took me on an emotional journey I was not expecting, and I could not bear to put it down.
The first half of the book is character-driven, focusing on the three women Joseph Carter stands up on Valentine's Day: Siobhan, Miranda, and Jane. We get to know Siobhan's over-scheduled world as a life coach with past relationship grief. We learn about Miranda's life as the only woman on a tree surgeon crew (a.k.a. arborist). And we wonder exactly what trauma caused Jane to flee corporate London for a volunteer job as the youngest member on staff at a charity shop in Winchester. Their lives intersect in only one way: their relationship with the same man.
The second half of the book (or maybe the last 3rd? eGalleys have wonky formatting) is hard to talk about without giving anything away. The pace intensifies, the story taking unexpected twists and turns. I anticipated loathing Joseph, yet he defied all my expectations, and I honestly couldn't decide what outcome I wanted...none of which mattered in the end because O'Leary is a genius.
For readers' advisors: character and story doorways are both VERY strong. The setting is England and Ireland. Some profanity and mild sexual content. One scene with accidental violence. Discussion or mention of grief, death of loved one, depression, dementia, stalking, sexual harassment, self harm, miscarriage, and panic attacks. LGBTQIA+ secondary characters.
