This starts out slow, and the pacing is sometimes jerky, but overall I enjoyed it! Despite the fact, or perhaps because of the fact, that it combines bug & body horror, two of the most effective horror categories for me. Yeuck.

Writing style, slow, I normally love atmospheric but it wasn't holding my attention. I did enjoy commentary on colonialism, racism, bi-phobia, identity issues.

A nice concept ruined by an absolutely stilted rythm, not many things were happening plotwise and most of them were so confusing I almost DNF.
I really liked the parts focused on how white colonialism is the worst and the world is still full of racist POS, would have loved more mother/daughter quality time.
And I get that Jade is an angry teen but she wronged and hurt everyone that loved her, it wasn't the best choice as a narrator IMO.

This is the best haunted house story I’ve read. Incredibly lyrical on the line level, cathartic in its themes, and an absolute mess of a main character who is a tender and sharp rendering of the oldest daughter of Asian immigrants who is also queer.

This book was almost impossible to put down. I tore through it, even though I rarely read horror and there was some disturbing stuff on the page. I really found Jade an instantly relatable character. While I, as a white woman, cannot directly relate to her experience as a Vietnamese-American teen who doesn't feel wholly at home in the US or in the country of her parents' birth, I can definitely remember being on the cusp of 18 and angry and at odds with my family. Jade's emotions feel so real and well-portrayed, giving me a lot of empathy for what it must be like to be in diaspora and have to deal with the legacy of issues like colonization and being the child of refugees.

This very complex human character serves to anchor a story that can otherwise feel a bit like a fever dream.

If you're not a big horror reader, make sure to check the content warnings to decide if this is a good book for dipping your toes into the genre!
