More anecdotal than I expected but the mere fact that this book exists brings me immense joy

Interesting book on the impact sheep have made on the development of human civilization and cultures. From providing food to wool to the first condoms, sheep have definitely made many contributions upon which humans have leaned heavy over millennia. The most surprising revelations in the book occur in the last chapter: 8% of sheep are gay; sheep are one of 2 species (the other being human) that possess same-sex preference for their entire lives; sheep can recognize and remember at least 50 faces over a long period of time; and they are trainable and can perform similarly to humans and monkeys on some tasks. And I thought sheep were stupid! In the same vein as The World in Six Glasses, A Short History of the World According to Sheep by Sally Coulthard is quite interesting and enlightening.

I wouldn’t exactly call this a history of the world as its main focus is often on England (and Europe more generally), but still pretty fascinating!

Interesting read. However while searching for further info about one of the things mentioned I found a website that predated the book and which was remarkably similar to the book. I don’t mind internet research but whole sections seemed the same.

I really love a good micro history and this one on sheep is no different. There were definitely some serious topics that were discussed but also a lot of interesting tidbits. I was honestly surprised by some of this and it has been actually considering investing in some wool items for my wardrobe. Definitely worth a read but as many reviews have pointed out, it’s very UK focused and not as “world inclusive” as the title might hint at for the history.
