I really do love Brubaker’s work, and I obviously gave this volume 4 stars because there is a lot I do really like about this. But what if, for once, the only prominent woman in the story didn’t get kidnapped / brainwashed? Just a suggestion. I do know it is different here with Natasha and her history, but must we damsel women to be saved by the man the book is named after?

Honestly, this series should probably have been titled The Winter Soldier and The Black Widow because I have been really enjoying how important she is in this story. Minus the kidnapping and brainwashing which clearly continues into the next volume. I was genuinely surprised by the twist / “this was the plan all along” moment at the end. So I am looking forward to how this resolves.

After taking care of two of the sleeper agents, the third one proves more elusive and deadly. The plot gets more complicated and personal for both Natasha and Bucky.

Shorter in pages but not in action or plot this ends with a cliff hanger that makes you happy you have the next volume on your library shelf.

3.5 stars.

Oddly enough, this one didn't do much for me at the end. Although I love Natasha and Bucky and their history in the Red Room, this story left me cold. The subplot of Latveria was meh and the other asset was a bit of a cliche. It wasn't as enjoyable as the first book.

3.5 stars, 4 if the climax wasn't so weak. It's almost as though Brubaker had all of these great set pieces but didn't know what he was going to build in the end. Still, the journey is fun and Lark's work is as great as ever here.
