Clearly I'm going to need to buy a coffee table to display this gem. Inside Bridgerton is as lavish as the Regency Era itself. The dust cover is lovely, and you should prepare to be delighted by the ornate endsheets inside both the front and back covers. It's a substantial book, weighing nearly three pounds, so that coffee table will need to have well-braced legs.

Every turn of a page reveals glorious photography. Many of the photographs are 'behind the scenes' shots. My favorites are the rather surreal images featuring the lavish sets... with the cameras and crew included.

Eye candy aside, there's plenty to read as well. Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers speak at length about how Bridgerton came to be, captured in conversational voices that are pleasant to read. There are many mini-interviews with just about everyone who worked on the show, both in front of the camera and out of sight. And all sorts of other bits and pieces. I get the feeling that the authors really didn't want to leave anything out!

I especially enjoyed learning more about location hunting, and the many bits of information about the Regency era, as I'm usually a Victorian era fangirl.

This is a book to re-visit time and time again. There's just so much included! One read-through is not enough. Now please excuse me, I must get to the furniture shops and order that coffee table.

The most impressive thing about this book is the aesthetics of the product. It's not a long book, but it's beautifully put together and is actually quite hefty! The pages are thick and glossy, which really serves to enhance the gorgeous photographs included throughout, and despite it being an 'outsize' book it's been very comfortable to sit with it propped against my knees to read. But the one thing that did bug me slightly was the constant changes in font size. I can't see that it's deliberate - on several occasions it happens within one 'article'. And I picked up on a few typos too.

Unfortunately, in my opinion the content doesn't match up to the looks. It mostly reads like a lot of self-congratulatory back slapping for a job well done, and while it appears to be split into 'chapters' mirroring the production process, there doesn't feel like very much depth of information or anecdotes from the making of the show. There are a couple of mentions of production difficulties (a roof caving in on freshly built sets etc), but there's no in-depth discussion of the effects these 'disasters' had, how they worked around them and so on. It seems to me that most major shows that do BTS books/interviews/documentaries make their production sound like a nightmare, and the way this us written just makes me feel like they've dropped in these little tidbits to join the club.

Although there is some input from the cast, it is quite limited and, again, it's not really about their filming experiences or getting under the surface of their roles. Instead, it all feels quite superficial; like they were only included as an afterthought. Likewise, if you are looking to work in the film/TV industry as a member of crew, you might find some interesting insights in here, but nothing detailed enough to give a full understanding of these important roles.

I absolutely love the series and think everyone involved deserves all the praise they can get. But this just doesn't shine enough of a light on all their hard work.

Here's the thing:

I do not think this book should have been written/compiled yet.

THE SHOW ONLY HAS TWO SEASONS!!!

I do think it needed more oomph, more stories, even more background from Julia Quinn about the books that haven't been Netflix adapted yet. It lacked some interviews that needed to be in there (like Rege Jean Page, hello!!). It could be more well rounded even after Seasons 3 and 4. I have the Downton Abbey insider book but that was after all six seasons.

But why did I give it a positive rating? Because it's Bridgerton. Duh.

Interesting overall, good inside look at bridgerton and the filming of shows in general. But also boring at parts and I skimmed over others.

A bit technical in parts but overall an interesting look at behind the scenes!
