"I wonder that religion can live or die on the strength of a faint, stirring breeze. The scent trail shifts, causing the predator to miss the pounce. One god draws in the breath of life and rises; another god expires."

I’ve had this book on my shelf FOREVER and it was gifted to me as a must read.

It started off slow, which was necessary to adequately introduce the characters before the plot picked up. Each character had such a distinct voice, allowing the reader to see the same situation through the eyes of a child, a bereaved mother, an arrogant teenager, and more. Orleanna’s sections were a masterclass in foreshadowing, and the tension I felt knowing what would happen but not to who or how propelled me through the first bit of the book.

This novel is hard to catergorizw because it’s so expansive. In some ways it’s a historical account, in others a character study. It covers family, religion, race, politics — in short, it covers human nature. This book will be a classic one day.
