Really just a great book. A quick read too. With characters who aren’t perfect and problems that could happen to anyone. Also the world is ending but that’s not important. But the main cast is diverse, and lovable. It really has such a powerful message. A good read to those suffering with mental illness as well.

Each chapter starts off with a little snippet depicting your typical YA chosen-one narrative complete with Immortals and blue eyed dreams, giving names to characters we never see develop because they die trying to prevent the next apocalypse. What the exact threat is? -- could not tell you. This is cause the bulk of the book is following Mike, a guy with his own complicated life as he navigates upcoming graduation. He runs into nebulous, messy blips-- leftovers from whatever the "indie" kids are trying to prevent, but we never actually learn the whole scope of the background drama because Mike never learns. He just happens to be living in the same town as where all the shit is going down, but like most people there, he knows something's up and it's probably life-threatening, but it's the indie kids' problem, and he just has to get through till prom.
Loved the concept, decent quick read, but nothing life-changing.

A beautiful mix of satire and meaning, with funny chapter headings that actually play into the plot. The characters feel like they could be my friends, and above all, they feel real--and they exemplify that not being the chosen one doesn't mean you're not chosen.
The Rest Of Us Just live Here is perfect. This is the story of 4 teens graduating, their last few months and some weird stuff going on it their town that they don't think effects them.
Mikey is our main character, Mikey is smart, awkward, and such a real character. He feels like he's the least wanted friend, the one to be pitied but he's not, he's so much more then that and he learns it in the best way.
All the characters are fantastic but it's Mikey's interactions with them that make them special.
You know what, I was going to talk about why all these characters are amazing and powerful and inspirational but I think everyone should discover that for themselves. What I really want to talk about is how this book describes having your friends as your family. I don't know about you guys but I'd count my friends as more then friends, I'd count my love for them not as a romantic love but as a love you have for your family and that's what these four characters have.
Micky and Mel have been through a lot together and are still working on life and to be honest aren't we all?
The chapters all start off with what's happening with the indie kids that are trying to save the world and town from sudden doom and I loved that. This book is amazing and relatable and just everything I could ever want in a not the chosen one story. Mickey is so relatable, all the friendships are messy and lovey, the issues are well done and truthful there is no romanticizing, there are no perfect families, there are real coming of age things all in a real world that might also feature some immortals and soul eating ghosts.
I can't wait to read more Patrick Ness and I know understand why everyone is so entranced by him and his books, it's because they are real and fantastical, and all things I could ever want to read. Also can this be a movie please, but like not a crappy movie? A real well done movie that everyone can love and have because I need my non book friends to experience this story.

Pure genius. Loved how this story had so much more of a deeper meaning. Granted it took me a while for it to click. I loved it. I love him (Patrick Ness) this book was funny, surprisingly close to real life, even with all the total fiction elements. I just wish it was longer.

i loved this !!!! i started off reading this book not knowing how i felt about it, but by the time i was halfway through, i knew it was getting 5 stars
i think the reason i loved this so much was because of the characters - i mean, there wasn't really that much plot that was super important, but that wasn't a bad thing. this book features such a diverse range of characters and all sorts of representation, and i found myself really relating to most of them somehow. i really connected both to mikey, the main character with anxiety problems and OCD, and his sister mel, who has an eating disorder.
jared is mikey's best friend, who is gay and has cat powers??? count me in, i loved jared. and then there's henna, who is black (mixed w/ a scandinavian dad). i found myself disliking henna the most because it felt like she was leading
i loved reading about the family dynamics of mikey + mel's family, and their close knit friend group who just wanted to focus on spending time together because they were graduating in a few weeks. the magic + indie kid stuff was kinda weird and i still don't really get it but i liked it, and i liked how ness used that as a subplot to show that the book wasn't about a "chosen one" and made fun of it a bit.
