This was a fun concept. You hear stories about main characters fighting battles against evil all the time,  but this book asks “what about the normal people?” The friend group is eclectic. I did have trouble remembering that this is indeed a world with gods and vampires, because the lore just seemed random. I think I would’ve loved this as a teenager. Mikey’s snark as well as the general teenage angst and jealousy are wildly relatable for that age. Nowadays, I know I’m not the target audience, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Overall, this was a neat read.

I found it kind of hard to follow the fantasy and the real-life part of the book.

I still love this book but Mike not getting his OCD healed bothers me. Having dealt with OCD for a long time I would never pass up a chance like that even if I learn a life lesson from it.

This was a really good book that managed to meet my expectations while simultaneously being totally different from what I expected. I thought it would be full on quirk but it was actually very thoughtful, beautifully handling a myriad of issues including anorexia, alcoholism, OCD, and homosexuality without ever feeling like an "issue" book. The quirk was still there, with a solid mix of humor, horror, and fantasy. A solid recommendation for teens who have outgrown Percy Jackson.
