This was for a book club where we had to choose any 'urban fantasy'. A very good YA read about a school where some of the kids are fighting various forces of evil and the regular kids are trying to not get killed and meanwhile get into college, get a prom date, figure out their sexuality, etc. 90% of the story is the regular kids who are a diverse and interesting group.

So quirky and fun!

Quirky and imaginative YA book that captures living with anxiety and OCD, but interwoven in an extraordinary fantastical situation. This balance of realism and fantasy is well done, but the end events seemed a little rushed to me, and also a little thrown together. All in all a nice summer read.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

This was such fun...realistic fiction with a tinge of sci-fic/fantasy.

While the chapters were brief intro's about the indie kids, the book wasn't really about them. It wasn't supposed to be. I found the intros to kind of just be a bit tongue in cheek and intentionally campy and satirical...slightly mocking the over used "chosen one" tropes found in YA lit (aka, the Katniss Everdeens of the world).

But like I mentioned above, this book isn't really about the indie kids, and the reader is intentionally just given the basics about what's happening to them. This book is about the other kids. The ones who also live in the town where the crazy stuff happens, and the peripheral and often unexplained ways that that world affects their lives. Even though they aren't always battling life and death, they have problems too--girls, mental illnesses, fear of the future---things that everyday teens can relate to. The characters were interesting and struggled with realistic thoughts and feelings, and over the course of time grew and dealt with some of their issues. These are the everyday flawed kids whose experiences are just as meaningful as a chosen indie kid.

Plus, I think that this is one a fun read (unlike a lot of the heavy doom and gloom that is one our list), that would have wide appeal, particularly for fans of the things that normally focus on "the chosen one".

Like those two episodes of Doctor Who told through the eyes of a random person on the peripheral, but closer to Blink than the weirder one that came later

This book was pretty good. It's about ordinary people living a semi-ordinary life. There were a few times I was bored with it, but overall, I liked it. And it was such a unique idea. I love unique ideas. Good read.

I thought this book was funny and challenged the traditional teenaged heroes idea. With all this 'chosen one' going around in YA fiction today it was refreshing to read something like this. It was almost like a coming of age story but with impressive witticism.
I laughed out loud in this book even though it was almost a parody book to all the books we love with a 'chosen one/ones'. But it did it in such a way where it wasn't being mean or making fun. It was just - to put plainly - a down to earth book. While still bring the elements of teenage heroes into play it showed a different side to popular novels nowadays. It brought things back to earth.
I really enjoyed this book.

This was an ok story about "the other guys" - regular kids just trying to get through high school. The characters were relatable and the story was different enough to make it interesting.

It was a very interesting take on paranormal activity mixed with regular teen issues.
