Clever and real. Loved how it was a Teen realistic fiction story living between epic occurrences a la Buffy or Teen Wolf.
Listened to this in audiobook form and finished it in my car at midnight last night. I nearly cried
Rating: 2.5
I was sort of disappointed by this novel to be honest. I didn't go into it with any expectations, it just sounded as a fun book to read that had an unique plot, but somehow it still managed to fall short on my expectations. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book and one thing that I absolutely loved about it was how diverse Patrick Ness made the characters, as a lot of people have talked about when discussing this book. Diverse characters are something that a lot of books lack, and I was so happy to see all the different characters is this book. It also talks about some very important topics, such as mental illness and sexuality.
The thing I was disappointed by was the fact that, in my opinion, the plot could have been so much better and it could have been a much better story. But Patrick Ness did a wonderful job with the characters and their relationships with the people around them and that is something I would like to see more writers include in their stories.

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting out of this.
I don't think I fully got the vision. Sure, these aren't the main characters in fantasy or science-fiction books, but they are the protagonists in contemporaries. Ultimately, this book isn't more than a high-school coming-of-age contemporary with a little gimmick.
Ness is a great writer. I found the prose engaging, and the book was easy to read. The characters felt real and interesting, and the gimmick was fun. However, I don't think it's mould-breaking or anything special, and I don't think it's making a critique of the fantasy/sci-fi/dystopian genre. It doesn't even vary from the contemporary genre that much. Without its little gimmick, it wouldn't be any different than anything else I've read in this genre, if anything it would be quite plain and unoriginal.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the premise. But I found the mane character very self centred but I think that was the point. Still it was a bit too close to reality for me. The teenage angst not the immortals killing everyone.

Not because I thought it was awful, only because this isn't the genre of books I like.
I picked this up knowing that it was a very light fantasy novel. More of a contemporary fantasy which I love, according to the fact that I love the simon snow series. but this was more sci-fi than fantasy for me and that just isn't it. if you took out the sci-fi part and build a more contemporary story on these characters it would have been right up my alley.
