wasn't what i was expecting from the blurb but was still good nonetheless

I loved the premise of this book. And I felt seen.

I really enjoyed this one and am still chuckling over it the next day. Not that it was all funny. There was a good balance between the humor and reasonably realistic teenage angst. Some of it was definitely a stretch, but not in a way that I minded. And the juxtaposition with the standard high-drama teen thriller was really clever. I've already recommended it to several people, and would definitely take a look at other books by this author.

i really loved this. wow. some incredible mental health rep that had me in near-tears. excited to pick up more patrick ness soon!

I wanted to love this. The idea of this book is so, so good. But it ended up being kind of boring. I kind of imagined this book to be more like the musical Puffs, where it was focused on the side characters, but they still had adventures of their own related to the "chosen one's" storyline. But instead, the side characters lived just totally normal lives. The characters weren't very memorable or intriguing, and I felt like there was no plot.

I did love at the beginning of each chapter, it had a synopsis of what the chosen ones were doing, I thought that was a fun way of offsetting them with the normal kids.

I love the concept about this, as I just kept thinking about Xander from BtVS, but it was kinda lacklustre.

It kinda just ends up being a YA coming of age story?? I didn't like Mikey nor did I like his relationship with his friends - especially
Spoileronce him and Henna kinda "get together"
- mostly because he's kinda a shitty friend.

Meh, at least it was a quick read. It just wasn't anything to write home about.

For The Rest Of Us Just Live Here and I, it was love at first sight; it had me at hello, and kept me infatuated the whole way through. I've heard a lot of positive praise for Patrick Ness, and as it turns out, he well and truly deserves it. The dude's a genius. The Rest Of Us Just Live Here deals with mental illness without romanticising it (a BIG pet peeve of mine in literature), discusses sexuality without dissecting it, depicts realistic teenage behaviour as a combination of poignant and petty, and, of course, gorgeously integrates Ness' atypical mainstream narrative -- that of the normal teens with normal names and normal issues -- into the for-once back-seated story of the classic dystopia heroes, whom The Rest Of Us Just Live Here is purposely and poetically not about. Why only four stars? It just felt like a four star book. I can't see the characters sticking with me outside of the reading experience, and there were elements of the story that gave me pause, but that in no way detracts from the book itself. I loved the book while I was reading it, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves Patrick Ness and stories about people with the same problems and you and I.

Enjoyed this book! Loved the characters and their relationship with each other. The ending was a bit too fast and too nicely tied up - didn’t have the gravity the rest of the book had.
