The overall idea of this book is an interesting point of view that varies from other YA novels, but still keeps with a common theme among them which is that groups can get along, and even though they're different they're going through the same stuff. The rest of us just live here takes place in a universe where stories told in other books or common plots of YA novels are reality, silmilar to [b:The Hazel Wood|34275232|The Hazel Wood (The Hazel Wood, #1)|Melissa Albert|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1500549460l/34275232._SY75_.jpg|53292100]. While this part was good and I enjoyed it greatly, the romantic plot line was either flawed, or it just sucked, or both. Throughout the whole book the main character had a crippling crush on this girl and at the end of the book it isn't thouroughly resolved. Also theres one character who's gay, but the author has a relationship develop with Mikey, and it's very flawed and kinda creepy. I don't know if I'd recommend, I'd just reread the hazel wood instead.
TW: ableist slurs, alcoholism, eating disorders (bolemia, anorexia), there's this throwaway line about fat people that made me uncomfortable (I don't know how to explain it, but that), underage sex, mention of 27-yo with 16-yo
Lmao, for like the first bit of the book I had little idea about what was going on coz I'm not used to the way its set out, but man, it was actually nice. I love the little chapter title thingies, the drama with the indie kids was the best!
That ending made me soft inside and everything ended as if it would turn out okay even if it didn't turn out okay, which is cool.
P. S. I love all these characters so much. They must all be protected at all costs!!

Great idea, but it feels so simply written, this distracted me from the story. I suppose this might be a deliberate reference to the sources, as I had a nagging feeling throughout I was missing the references, as I haven't read a lot of the influences. Basically - I didn't get it and I feel old!
genre: fantasy
age recommended: 12+
themes: destiny, satire, parody, friendship
notes: reminded me a lot of "The Darkest Part of the Forest" except funnier and less angsty.
opinions: I loved this book. I loved the idea behind it. I loved the humor. I know it's terrible but I would love to see this as a movie.

I read this book in the span of roughly three hours. I didn't even know that much time had passed. I loved this book. Like a lot.
The Rest of Us Just Live Here is about a group of seniors just trying to survive their last 4 and half weeks left of high school while the Indie kids try to save the world. The main character Micheal has some pretty serious anxiety issues that some people may be able to relate to. This whole book is about "find the extraordinary in the ordinary." I freaking loved it

I reeeaally enjoyed this book. It’s hilarious.
It’s about the ones who don’t fall in love with the vampire or who don’t have to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. It’s about the ones who have to sit and watch this happen and have no clue what’s really going on. Hoping they don’t blow up their High School before they graduate.
I don’t really know what to say except hilarious and one of a kind!😄👏🏼 You get to follow the “real” story in the beginning of every chapter so you know what’s going on with the so called “Indie Kids”(who falls in love with vampires and die for example, that’s an indie kid)
It’s written in one characters POV and it’s kinda like a diary and he kinda talks to you and I enjoy that POV very much.
It’s just a story I’ve never seen before and it’s well written, funny and also a calm amount of love, not just romance but also friendship love 💕 They are just so... ordinary. And I love that. You can relate to them.
ALSO! You realise, when you read the “real story” that it’s hilarious how it’s accurate to every YA fantasy book there is😂 I laughed my ass off every time I read the short summary of what’s going on because it’s just so accurate😂 *** Read. It.***

I enjoyed this, but I felt like something was maybe missing? This might bump to four stars, I'm unsure.
Contrary to most of the reviews of this book, I didn't find this boring enough. Despite being billed as "the rest of us", the characters managed to find themselves embroiled in the centre of the action anyway. I realise - though obviously I lack the first-hand experience of running away from gods and vampires - it must be difficult to avoid that, but, good lord, it was hard to feel any sympathy for them at all.
I did, however, appreciate the scene with the psychiatrist. It was a fantastic treatment of mental health and the stigma/blame that we give ourselves over it.
