I liked the premise is of this book, though it wasn’t as fully fleshed out as I might have dreamed. I liked the characters, and I liked their nuances. Takes a minute to get into, because you’re launched right into their connections. I appreciated the described experience of mental health struggle (OCD, disordered eating as control). I LOVED the god. A bit like Radio Silence x Simon Snow. Less than both of those, but still really good.

This is a very fun young adult novel about the normal kids going to high school while the "indie kids" (basically Buffy and her friends) deal with an impending paranormal apocalypse. The first paragraph of each chapter explains what's unfolding with the indie kids, and the rest of the book is a bout the normal kids, living their lives in a town that happens to keep having unnatural disasters every few years. It's a cute premise, but the characters are actually compelling, and the issues they deal with are relatable and realistic (everything from not being sure if you're in love with your best friend, to having useless parents, to dealing with mental illness). It's well done and not gimmicky, despite the premise.

It was different to what I normally read.
I really enjoyed this book. It made me laugh a lot and was a very different perspective on how the world works when 'just another apocalypse' is happening.
I loved to see how everyone else sees the world when the heroes are running around saving it.
It partly reminded me of 'Good Omens' by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman because of the mix ups and the teenage perspectives in a way. It reminded me of the way things can get too serious and how you can be important even in a very normal life (even if the apocalypse is happening).

I really like this book, what a cool concept! I read it in one afternoon, couldn't put it down.

I'm sure every fan of YA has spared a thought at some point for how the background characters are experiencing the incredible, terrifying, world-changing event that we only see through the eyes of the Chosen One protagonist. For example: "What were the other Hogwarts students thinking about all of Harry, Hermione, and Ron's adventures?" This book brilliantly takes this thought and builds a wonderfully engaging story about families, relationships, and mental health around it.

Things I Loved:
-JARED
-All the characters were fantastically complex and likeable
-the chapter headings informing us of the Super Important Plot the "indie kids" were dealing with were hilarious
-the cats
-Mikey and his sister's mental health struggles were so real and handled very nicely (from the perspective of someone with mental health issues but not the specific mental health issues the characters have)
-the FRIENDSHIPS and the FEELINGS of said friendships

Things I Didn't Love:
-[huge character relationship spoiler]
SpoilerJared/Nathan was something that if you described it to me I'd say "hell YES I want to read that!!!" but in actuality in the book it was... underwhelming at best. NO build-up or hints at all. I get it was supposed to be a surprise, but we didn't even see them talk to each other once. We didn't even really see Nathan outside the context of... whatever was going on with him and Henna, so I'm still not sure what my opinion of him is. A little development on the page of that could have gone a long way.

Overall this was a really interesting book and one I'd definitely recommend if any of the above interested you. PLUS the cover on the hardcover edition GLOWS IN THE DARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Which scared me the first time I noticed it but is incredibly cool.

So call me brain-dead (end of school term thing) but while I could see there were two storylines happeniing with the 'indie kids' in the little synopses, I didn't really 'get' what the author was trying to achieve with it at first. Maybe it was because he didn't pull the premise off elegantly, or maybe we've just been spoiled with all his other great works, but this story didn't shine for me the way his others have. Don't get me wrong tho' I read it in two sittings and enjoyed it, it was very OK.
