I was hooked on this book from the thrilling first chapter. Reading this feels like listening to a strange parable around a campfire. It's a coming of age story with a complex family dynamic and unpredictable, wild characters, along with just... so many symbols. I don't relate to Fish per se, his circumstances are so different than anything I can imagine, but I find him endearing in his own strange ways. The book is beautifully written, not only in the really lovely moments of peace between the more intense, violent moments, but I also love the family dynamic. Whistle and Reef and Nutzo, the adults who live on the island with, Fish care so deeply for him, and they also love each other so much. Even with all the crazy stuff that happens in the novel, the book has so much heart.
