Another charming installment from Myrtle, Miss Judson, and Peony!
Myrtle Hardcastle, the precocious 12-year old daughter of a prosecutor, loves mysteries and things that other girls her age find strange like poisons, causes of death–yes, Morbid Myrtle. Since she aspires to be an investigator, it’s only natural that she follows her passion and becomes embroiled in situations that are not suitable for a well-bred young lady. Set in Victorian England, the Myrtle Hardcastle series is appealing and charming, with wonderful characters and intriguing plots.

A delightful read, like Murder on the Orient Express for twelve year olds. Funny, smartly written, perfectly paced and craftily full of well placed clues.
“He gave me a familiar look. ‘Anybody ever tell you you’re morbid?’
I almost smiled. ‘Frequently.’”
Just the right amount of morbid fascination, Victorian science and delightful eloquence makes Myrtle a loveable protagonist.

I loved this book just as much as I did the first one! There is something very nostalgic and exciting about these stories; they have the feel I get from the classic literature I grew up with Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew, and maybe a little Secret Garden all mixed together, but there is a modern perspective that keeps these books hysterically and admirably feminist. Not only has Ms. Bunce added in strong female characters a plenty who deny their rigid social standards in differing ways, but she also adds in racially and culturally diverse characters.
Myrtle continues to delight me. In this book, she must solve a jewelry theft and murder that occur on the train taking her great-aunt, governess, and herself to a seaside vacation.
I think these books are great fun for kids and adults too! If you are a fan of cozy mysteries definitely pick up these books!
