The middle is a bit slow but if you read it fairly quickly its not bad. Don't put it down half way and come back days later-then it feels way too long and drawn out. The last 200 pages are so good

“I am priestess of a sandcastle in a land of dust and starlight”

A bit longer than necessary for a sequel, in my opinion. And it contains a disturbing scene that I was not ready to read about in a book like this. But overall it is a great way to continue the series; it went in a way different direction than I thought it would.
Can’t wait to see where Taylor will take us in the finale!

I was definitely much less harsh in my ratings than I was when I first read this years ago, but this series is still absolutely beautiful

Awesome second instalment of the daughter of smoke and bone trilogy. I could have read more chapters of the adventures of Mik and Zuzu (basically just them running around the world as Zuzana comes up with increasingly more challenging tasks for Mik to complete). I loved the world building and learning more about Eretz and the cliff hanger ending had me yelling as I reached for the 3rd book. For a book that was quite slow paced in the middle, I still felt that Taylor kept me on my toes. You cannot possible guess the twists and turns that this book is going to make. Just when you think you've got it, the carpet gets pulled out from under your feet.
