Dance of Thieves is a dual narrative following a young Vendan soldier named Kazi (of Brightmist) on a mission to steal something from Tor’s Watch. Our second narrative is told from the perspective of the newly titled Patrei (leader/protector) of Tor’s Watch, Jase Ballenger. Our story is romance heavy, a turn of events in the beginning of the novel creating a situation in which Kazi and Jase develop feelings for each other, and while the romance is quick to develop, it doesn’t feel like insta-love, instead it is a gradual, natural, sweet thing. Feelings end up playing a central part to the motivations of the characters throughout the novel, so if you’re not a fan of romance as a major part of the story I’d steer clear of this one. ‘
I love the world of the Remnant Chronicles, it is culturally diverse and extremely fascinating. Dance of Thieves explores Hell’s Mouth and Tor’s Watch and we get to learn about both their history and culture. Characters from The Remnant Chronicles make appearances in Dance of Thieves, but you don’t have to read The Remnant Chronicles to understand or enjoy Dance of Thieves. You will, however, be spoiled for the ending of The Remnant Chronicles so I would recommend reading them in publication order.
When we are first introduced to Kazi and Jase I was a bit skeptical about how well suited they’d be for each other. I expected a clash in personalities, they’re very similar in some ways and very alike in others, but instead of this creating conflict, it created a lot of great romantic tension. And while their personalities sometimes led them into heated arguments, I actually enjoyed their screaming matches with each other, they’re both super passionate, caring people and they worked really well together. Kazi is a spy, so there is an element of secrecy/lack of communication in their relationship. This isn’t a plot device I usually enjoy, but I think it was very well handled and given the circumstances, the withholding of information made sense.
While Kazi and Jase are really great together, they also stand well on their own. I’ve come to realize that thieves are some of my favourite characters to read from, and Kazi is a very clever and believable thief. She has an understandably guarded personality, and she’s a very compelling character to read from. Jase is very family oriented, he puts on a tough if not arrogant air, but is also really sweet. Mary E. Pearson also does a great job with her side characters, Kazi’s crew members Synové and Wren really pop off the page and I really came to love the Ballengers. It’s so fantastic to see such a tight knit family, they form a strong front, but behind closed doors they argue and bicker.
I have nothing but praise when it comes to Mary E. Pearson’s writing style, it’s very pretty and it brings another layer to the world of the Remnant chronicles. In terms of the story, I really enjoyed the plot and plot progression, things didn’t always work out the way I expected them to and it made the story fun and unpredictable. Parts of the ending did feel quite cheesy, and what was with that last chapter? but it left off on a way that has me highly anticipating the sequel.
