This book was okay, but clearly drawing from the world of the earlier series which I have not read. That made some of the worldbuilding and the magic system tricky to figure out (like Kazi seeing Death and hearing ghosts, which is not huge plot point despite how it sounds). The romance was fine and the characters were fine - I liked Kazi much more than Jase, and wished we had gotten more of her as a thief and gotten to see more of three main women as Rahtan. Jase’s family was interesting and I did like the writings from Grayson and the world right after the Destruction. But it just didn’t quite click for me.

DID NOT FINISH: 24%

I feel like I immediately put this book at a disadvantage by reading it right after finishing The Poppy War. I wasn’t used to the first person POV which I think made me see it as less put together. I think if I went back into this book with the expectations I have now, I would like it a lot more.

I will finish this series and didn't dislike the characters but it was kind of meh

Loved every second of it except the cliffhanger ending because book 2 wasn't immediately available to me.

I didn't realize at first that there is an earlier trilogy set in this world (I do plan to read it now that I know), but I didn't feel confused by anything, just intrigued, which is a sign of good world building to me. I also really liked the two main characters, and how well the book really got me to identify and sympathize with both of them. Looking forward to the sequel and the trilogy.
