I'm only giving this a 3 star rating instead of a 4 star rating because it took me a while to get into the book. I felt like it was dragging at the start but finally picked up pace half way through the book.
I started to get more interested in Kazi and Jase's relationship. It's an enemies to lovers trope. No spicy scenes. Very tame.
The world building was slow at the start but really picked up and it drew me into it. There were so many intertwining plots that were presented really well. I started to root for Kazi and Jase. I even loved Kazi's friends and their personalities.
Kazi's past was told really well. I felt her fear through the book when we learnt about what happened to her.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book so I can find out what happens in the end!

I didn’t have a bad time I just think that there wasn’t anything that blew me away. It felt like it was trying to be a lot of different types of fantasy and it didn’t pull completely through on any of them. Maybe more of a 2.5 but that’s just because it wasn’t a grovel. The writing was fine, it just didn’t trust the reader and it felt almost as though the author wrote the book without an outline and then made one after and just added a few random scenes. The characters were boring and their romance was bland. Tik tok duped me again. I really did like the beginning because I thought this could go in an interesting place and then the author didn’t take us to that interesting place.
Also every name in the book was like that meme with the lady and the chalkboard with the baby names like Lakyn and Makaylee

Why do fantasy authors have to give everyone weird names? I could not figure out who was who, what was a city and what was a freaking horse for the first few chapters. This is a slow paced romantasy, too slow at times and I wasn't eager to pick it up. I did enjoy the lyrical writing, and liked the characters; it's fascinating when death becomes a character alongside traditional players.
"He was a man, not a monster, as you imagine. He died the way all men die, one breath at a time".
