Rather enjoyed this strange, slick little book.

Not sure what it was about Banks, but I can’t work out whether he was an absurdist or a nihilist. I don’t imagine he had toys for long before they were mangled beyond recognition.

A divisive novel, cited by the author as his least favourite book. It’s densely written, filled with symbolism and depth and also ridiculously violent in its third act. I’ve always appreciated it more for what it is than what it does.

Bit too off the wall for me to be a five star,( that’s a first) also, being one of his earlier books it reads like historical fiction, eighties being an era of Central American political lunacy.(not much change really) Still one of my top five authors, just not his best.

(Dug review out of the depths of LiveJournal.)

[This] is great if you like enough gruesome things happening to a person that she turns into a ninja. Rape as a plot device to turn your character into a bionic protagonist is not exactly on my list of clever author tricks.

If you think Banks' SF can be dark, cynical and end in a downer, try reading his "mainstream" fiction. Like Canal Dreams, for example :D
