I agreed with many of his main points, but I still don't think they're good enough arguments to quit social media. As others have commented, the book felt quite superficial. It could have been summarised and published as an article, really. The most interesting topics, which were not included, are those he mentions in the conclusion.

To be honest he lost some stars right in the first argument. As a psychologist, I can't get over his tone when he talks about behaviourism. The way we behave in social media responds to the rules of behaviour, just as in "real life". All companies take advantage of this, so knowing those mechanisms is essential to understand how they manipulate us.
He also claims to be "uncommonly informed" and to have expertise in the arguments he develops in the book, but mixes up classical and instrumental conditioning, and uses technical and lay terms pretty much interchangeably (e.g. reinforcement, punishment), which are two of my pet peeves. The way he talks about addiction also rubs me the wrong way.

Finally, I'm not sure what he thinks would be accomplished if people deleted their social media accounts. It's a non-solution, really. In the big picture, all these problems stem from capitalism and greed. We can't change that overnight, but the one thing we can do -and Lanier would disagree with me here- is work on policies and legislation to regulate some aspects of the internet to protect its users.

Oh and lastly, I don't know if he's trolling, but does he really think people will research and actively avoid products and services by Amazon, Facebook, and Google? Yeah, good luck with that.

Thought provoking.

Notes:

-you are losing your free will. awareness is the first step to freedom.

-what started as advertising became full on behavior modification manipulation since there is an ease of using negative emotions to foster addiction in humans.

-we are THE PRODUCT, not the customer of social media companies.

-qutting social media is the means to avoid the chaos of our times which is toxic in the smallest quantities... assholes get the most attention and therefore generate asshole tendencies.

-your character is the most precious thing about you (along with your health). social media makes us inauthentic and makes what we say meaningless, lost in context and lost in the abyss of other meaningless posts.

-social media is destroying the capacity for human empathy.

-theory of mind (the ability to think about mental states, both your own and those of others) is key to respect and empathy - people need it and it is hurt by social media
