This book has some great ideas but I wish it had given more focus to just a few of them rather than trying to do all of them at once.

Honestly, I loved the art (that’s what got my attention in the first place!), but this story just didn’t have…enough. Of anything, really. The world-building is non-existent - I don’t necessarily need to know how the apocalypse began (sometimes it’s cool for that to remain a mystery) but we also don’t learn aaaaaaanything about the virus. You see through the art that it’s like botanical zombies but there’s no actual discussion or explanation about that. There also wasn’t enough character depth for me. Backstories are vague and I didn’t find that I came away from the story caring about either one or what happens to them! Unfortunately, a very forgettable read.

While the art can sometimes be unrefined, I still liked this. The details about the zombie apocalypse were nonexistent, but the story is more about the girls healing than the zombies. Fun but not exactly standout.

Younger fans of the Waking Dead may like this.

Trigger warnings: zombies, death, death of a sibling (in the past), gore, body horror, eyeball trauma, blood, gun violence, self harm.

Periodically I read a book where I'm just like "......................legitimately wtf was that?". This was one of those books. It's a zombie story but it's also a roadtrip story but it's also a mental health story? And I don't think it quite did any of the three aspects justice. There are a lot of flashbacks and yet there's never really any solid backstory to the zombie apocalypse, and the protagonists seems to spend an awful lot of time wandering around wheat fields with no weapons when there could be zombies literally anywhere at any moment.

The eyeball trauma was definitely an aspect I didn't see coming and I absolutely could have done without it.
