This book had a very interesting premise. A young man who befriends an older and damaged man with a mysterious past who is married to a kind, lighthearted yet frustrated woman. The young man develops a fascination with the old man and tries to understand why the man is so withdrawn and resentful towards the world.

Unfortunately, the book was boring to me. I did not care for the main character and when the tragic reasons for the old man to be the way he is are revealed, they didn't have any effect on me. I think that the way in which the author tells the story is what makes it so uninteresting, as I felt the writing style very cold and distant, even when the tragic events from the old man's past came to light.
