Very readable but honestly quite mediocre, somewhat funny at times but never really progressed beyond that? Imo it was an allegory for cycles of abuse in families but honestly considering how Burns basically tells us the novella is about love towards the end I think our opinions probably align.

Still, apart from the use of some fun vocabulary and oblique references to post-structuralist humour of some sort, it doesn’t feel particularly uwu literary or meaningful. It’s enjoyable though.

Mostly Hero is a farcical satire of superheroes and the meaning of love. It is a big fan of a run on sentence and was a very fun time until it wasn’t. Sort of like staying too long at a party. It just got a little tiring and gave me a mild to moderate headache. I think if you’re going to read it, just do it in one, there’s plenty to like about it and I’d certainly read other things by Burns. Its batshit in a fun way, and if you are in the form for something a bit daft that also relays a larger truth then this wouldn’t be a bad shout. On a different day it might be a 4 but for the time being a 3/5.

What an odd read.

After reading Milkman, I wanted to see what other Burns I could find. Mostly Hero is a novella that more or less uses Milkman's strange stream-of-consciousness style to tell an absurdist superhero parable about violence and communication. Also an excuse for phrases like “a blood-trail resembling a post-structuralist anti-principle of traditional abstracted countercomposition.” A real Cheshire cat of a book, kind of a jumble and not the masterwork of Milkman, but definitely bizarre in the fun way.

I loved Milkman and also really enjoyed Little Constructions, but this one was too weird and fantastical for me. Still great writing skills, but the story didn't do anything for me.

think this could be an interesting recent book to study in english at school cause there's clearly so many (dry) metaphors but as a whole the book wasn't exactly enjoyable to read
