Jan Brett's illustration's are as beautiful as ever! I explained her use of the frame in the illustrations before I started reading the book to the kids, then used it as a predictive exercise throughout the story. The kids were very engaged!

Read as part of 2nd grade author study. Then, to Kindergarden as part of sequencing unit. We love side pictures!

my niece and i read this every christmas, and never have i been more emotionally attached to a mitten. the sketches are adorable, and she always squeals when the final animal is stuffed in the glove! this book is so comforting and perfect for wintertime.

The theme for one of my book clubs this month is "childhood favorites," so I gathered an assortment of some of the books I remember loving as a wee bean. I didn't remember the storyline of this one, so it was fun to approach it with somewhat fresh eyes. I loved the brief foreword by the author, written twenty years after its original publication in the year of my birth ('89, babyyyy), wherein she discusses the Ukrainian fairy tale she is retelling and the ways she tried to learn more about the culture and get it right, as it were. The stork's nest on the cabin gave her the luck of this book's lasting success. ❄️

This book is based off of a Ukrainian folktale and is filled with magic. We see animal after animal squeeze into the discarded mitten, and we watch the mitten grow and stretch. The illustrations are extremely intricate and the text is perfect for a read-aloud. Very sweet.
For: fans of woodland animals; readers looking for a playful story.
Possible red flags: some readers may find the book too suspenseful as there is a lot of build up to the climax.
