Two short stories about the third of the seven Sins : greed.
It's been a while since I read any Tolstoy and I enjoyed those, in which you can find the author's Christian anarchy and his love for the little people.
The first is about the devil (easily) tempting a farmer to become richer - you'll find the answer to the question at the end of the story ; the second about a poor shoemaker with a big heart.
Though this shoemaker was indeed a very good man, I prefered, sadly, the first story that feels soooo contemporary still...

I loved this tale, it’s so reflexive and now I’m constantly thinking about the greed and the really important things in the word too

I really enjoyed this. I like What Men Live By a little more than How Much Land Does a Man Need?

I have a mixed past with Tolstoy’s works and these were probably some of my favorites.

A short but good introduction to Tolstoy's writing that isn't as intimidating as his longer works but still captures his essence well. A story about greed and how it comes to bring us ruin, followed by a story about the power of love and selflessness. Both are interesting, vivid, and perfectly good little stories to sit down and read in the space of an afternoon.

An enjoyable folkloric tale of a man’s greed for land. The writing style is simple and vivid, the characters are well developed in very few sentences and the final scene is a perfect Russian ending.
