Luce is one of the dumbest MCs I've ever read. She acknowledges that Cam is sweet and so nice to her yet she obsesses over the boy who flipped her off? She's creepy when it comes to him—looking at his record and searching up his family name—but she doesn't even try to stay away or ignore him, regardless of how he treats her (aka like shit.) And the amount of hate she has for Gabbe for no reason—is it because she's a pretty blonde? Because she incorrectly thought Gabbe was Daniel's girlfriend? It was like Kate took all the bad traits of Bella Swan and amplified the stupid and obsessiveness. Molly, though, I can understand but her instant hatred for Luce didn't make any sense. And the amount of cryptic dialogue is ridiculous, especially from Molly. Also anyone else find it weird how the ONLY characters to get full-fledged descriptions are all white? That the only Black character gets “he has dreadlocks” as a descriptor?

I remember reading this series when it first came out. I really liked the series and it was horrible having to wait a year or two for the next book, who could wait that long? Now rereading the first book, I find that I don't actually have any nostalgia for it. This may be because everything that I remember about the series is in the last two books, so if I read them again maybe I would feel it.

For a first book in a series this feels weak. It is not a bad read but it also doesn't stand out, and some of the cooler plot points don't come in until later in the series. It was actually darker than I remembered, but that along doesn't really make it stand out in the low stakes and low investment main plot. I also struggled with Daniel as one of the love interests and the main one. Now that I think about it I also didn't like him when I read this series before.

I will give the series this, for a debut novel it is not the worst and when it came out the market us in it's boom for these kind of books. I feel the series also gets better as it goes with some different plot points from what was in the market at the time. So whilst the first book was kind of weak and has a bad love interest the rest of the series does get better, or maybe it is that nostalgia finally kicking in.

One of the most bland, annoying main characters I've ever encountered. Everything this girl does is motivated by two guys or by what someone else tells her to do (except it's portrayed as if she's the one with a strong will). The love between the protagonist and the love interest is based upon absolutely NOTHING except "just because", and their relationship suffers from a bad case of "she's not like the other girls"-syndrome...except she's literally like every other girl...but hates one of the girls for exactly that reason AND because she dares to talk to one of the love interests. Also just a very heterosexual book.
The ending of the book is extremely anticlimactic...and even here the main character has no drive whatsoever to survive or do anything against the people trying to hurt her. One of the view likeable characters dies but it's really just mentioned in 2 sentences when she's the one person the protagonist developed an actual relationship towards. Main character really just doesn't feel anything abt it which is mainly caused by the poor writing of the autor towards the end, it almost feels like they were trying to end the book as quickly as possible. The death wasn't sad at all even though it probably should have been. After this book was recommended to me quite a lot, reading it was pretty disappointing. However, it's quite the simple and quick read. Shallow, nothing deep, but also just not enough to really make me want to read even one of the other books of the series.
