The writing felt stilted and over-explained, even for a YA book. There was no resolution to the story, it just ended. I expected more from such a successful author.
Nope, not what I expected at all, I had high hopes because The Client was my favourite Grisham novel and featured a young protagonist as well.
Theodore Boone is nowhere near as good as that. I realize that Grisham is writing this for young adults, but it's quite insulting that he thinks he has to talk down to them. I was reading adult novels at a very young age, and I definitely don't like books that talk down to kids. Kids understand a lot more than we give them credit for.

I honestly don't get why people do not like this. Let me preface by saying I am the MCs age, and honestly I can relate to him. Sure, I don't know much about law, but I have a strong sense of justice and I am very passionate about the things I like (I literally spent ONE hour STRAIGHT ranting about Greek Mythology today?!). The MC is likable, judge is THE best dog, and the characters are well fleshed! Right after I finished this series I started the Percy Jackson series, and honestly GREAT recommendation if you liked this, read PJO, or vise versa. Grisham's writing is phenomenal, and that does not stop at his Young Adult genre books. I see a lot of people argue that he is jumping on the "YA train", but honestly why is that bad? Yes, too much of one thing can be bad, but a law book in YA? That does not seem harmful, and honestly I learned so much from it. If I did not have so much on my plate right now, I'd re-read the series. This is a great introduction to kids who want to learn more about law, or just someone who likes mystery YA novels!! I was so invested reading this, and I am *not* a huge non-fiction person (I think I have 10? Non-fiction books out of around 100 books on my shelf, one of which is this book), and this book had me up till 2am reading until gravity forced my eyelids closed. 5/5 stars, great read, great author (for the most part), relatable characters, and great plot.
I really liked this book, so much so I convinced my teacher when I was in the 8th grade to read it to us. They all loved it. I hope this grows in popularity.

John Grisham may be the king of realistic legal fiction, but no public elementary school has a class with 16 students!
In all seriousness, I’m very clearly not the target audience for this. I likely would have loved this series when I was 10-12. (I read this for a 2024 reading challenge [the 24th book by an author]).

I thoroughly enjoyed Grisham bringing the legal thriller into children's literature. He has kept the legalities quite simple which will help children understand the setting while not getting bogged down in the ticky details. There were also a few story lines that didn't get developed. I particularly liked Theo's character that he had such a thirst for justice and was still compassionate.
There were a few red flags that Grisham is not familiar with young teenagers. For example, Theo states that only a few of the eighth graders have cell phones and no one would admit to liking girls.

I like the main character, which I feel is a must for a long series like this. It's kind of silly and nothing too crazy, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. 7/10
Curse me for believing I'll get a good short court drama which ends in 300 pages, which is not actually just the first part of a story, in which almost none of the plot threads get conclusions, and I'm left with a series on my hands to read if I want to know more.
Here's why it should have been good: I adore Veronica Mars, which is about a high-schooler that kicks some butt in the private investigation department. Theodore Boone is about a middle-schooler who kicks some butt in the law department, and throughout the book I felt a distinct VM vibe from the story, with fellow students and even adults coming to Theodore with their problems and Theo solving them right quick. But it turns out that the conceit doesn't actually carry over very well.
