As with Legends & Lattes, I absolutely loved this book. Over 300 pages and the only thing I can find to fault it on was the technicality of poisonous toads, so much of it was good. I particularly liked Satchel, which seems weird with only a basic explanation of the character.

This book was... fine. I felt similarly about Legends and Lattes, but hoped maybe the second book would have improved in the first. I can't say it connected with me any more this time. The interactions between characters were witty in a way that sometimes came across as trite, and the detailed descriptions of the layout of rooms got tiring after awhile. I do wonder if some of this is because I'm jaded after reading a lot of books in the cosy/hopeful genre though, perhaps someone newer to the trope would get more out of it.

I can even believe it… I loved this book even more than the first. It was just perfection. That ending had me oohing and awwwing.

Travis Baldree could have Viv just sit and watch grass grow and 1. he would make it sound immensely cozy and 2. I would gobble up the hell out of it.

Knowing this is a prequel, it was hard to read about a certain relationship knowing how it would all end up, but the epilogue brought on warm fuzzy hope-for-the-future feelings with this. I personally loved the first book more but this was just as enjoyable and inspiring and would highly recommend.

Just like L&L, B&B introduces us to a version of Viv that can only really exist there in that time. This younger viv, eager to be out doing mercenary work, but instead stuck injured in a sleepy seaside town is so interesting to follow. It builds on the style that Travis created in the original and in part breaks away to save treading the same ground of the original. I adore it. It was so well written and I'm going to re-read L&L with this newly gathered knowledge and see if that changes my understanding in any way.
