this was a nice prequel. i enjoyed getting to see viv’s origin story. how she got the sword and her love for books. i liked the characters she met and i loved how it was tied together in the epilogue, set after the end of the first book.
simple, easy-read.

Another nice fantasy story with lower stakes and comfy characters.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the book the whole way through but Baldree really aced it with the ending in my opinion, which made the book worth it to read. I think there were a few too many character plot points floating around, one in particular didn't really add much to the story in my opinion and slowed things down. But at the end of the day, it was a nice read, and if you enjoyed Legends & Lattes, I think you'll enjoy this one, too.

I hope Baldree writes more books, especially about Viv, because I just adore them so much. I somehow loved this book even more than I did Legends & Lattes which is saying a lot because I loved L&L 🥰 They're both just so dang wholesome and lovely. The humor is perfect, there's just enough intrigue to keep you invested, and the characters are just lovely. I think what put this one over the edge for me was the overall theme of timing especially in relationships, the bookshop/books focus, and the tie-in to L&L. That epilogue was so fucking adorable I can't even stand it. What a perfect book to end my 2023 with! 🥰

a lovely and warm story!! started off a little slow but the second half really picked up. i think i like it more than legends & lattes, but it took me a bit to warm up to it. i love satchel so much and the epilogue was extremely sweet.

An absolute joy of a book that had me engaged from the first pages.

The characters were so vivid and I found myself in love with all the unique personalities - from major characters to side ones. It created a picture of a living community, where everybody has their own lives outside of the story (very thematic for the book!) Potroast was an absolute gem as well, and reminded me a lot of the pug in our family.

It's amazing how a story with so much action can still feel so relaxing and reflective. I loved the ways the stories intertwined before eventually colliding. They led into each other well, with elements showing up that I knew would be relevant later, even if I didn't know how yet! I also got very excited that the Bonedust part of the title was actually relevant!

The epilogue was also so soft and makes me long for the story after the story. However, the main story is enjoyable without knowledge of Legends and Lattes and stands alone as a gem of its own.

Legends and Lattes is one of my favorite books of all time. Cozy fantasy is the genre for me, and I feel like this series is the perfect example of what the name of the genre means. It's about personal stories focused on characters, with slices of life in a fantasy setting. Sure, the stakes are low, but stories don't always have to be about the end of the world and life-or-death stakes to have meaning and depth. I loved every minute of reading this book, and even purposefully slowed myself down because I didn't want it to end. I also unexpectedly found myself crying when it did. This book is a prequel that can be read as a standalone, but it does have mild spoilers for Legends and Lattes in the epilogue.

I loved this almost as much as the first one. Just what I needed.
