'Wonder Woman Vol. 4: Godwatch' ends the run by Greg Rucka with this volume collecting the even numbered issues from 16-24. That's part of the problem.

The main story arc is about Veronica Cale and her daughter Isadore who has been defaced by Phobos and Deimos. Phobos and Deimos want Isadore to find out where Themyscira is, in exchange for the return of her daughter. Now Veronica must depend on the person she dislikes, Wonder Woman, in order to help her daughter. Along the way, Circe shows up to offer her brand of help, and Barbara Ann Minerva becomes the Cheetah.

The story jumps around in time a bit, but I had no problem following the events. I liked the story and most of the art, but some of it felt a bit lacking for the title. The alternating issues idea will hopefully end soon because it's strange to keep hopping back and forth. I loved the story "And Then There Were Three" from the Wonder Woman annual which shows how Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman all came to be a force to be reckoned with. It's clever and shows all of these characters on equal footing.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Part of the lower rating comes from DC editorial failing at their jobs. "Godwatch" is not a stand alone volume, but a companion to the previous volume, "The Truth." The editorial choice to put them out of order undermines what would have been a stronger story. Volume 4 actually takes place in between the previous volumes, fleshing out character dynamics and motivations that were overlooked in the major arc. Nicola Scott's art remains the consistent high bar and the last issue where Diana meets Superman and Batman are good send offs but it's still an absolute continuity mess to read unless you have the previous volumes on hand.

It took me awhile to warm to this run (I think I was more confused than anything else after The Lies; finally picking up on the weird structural thing across the volumes was a REVELATION) but I'm on board now. The story from Veronica Cale's POV is excellent, and she's a great villain. Plus I really enjoyed Bilquis Evely's art in this one (I like her style SO much more than Liam Sharp's); especially her Circe. I do think I'd like to read the entire run again, all together. I'm wondering if that might clear up some of my dissatisfaction with the earlier volumes.

This one was pretty confusing. Volumes 3 and 4 are still doing the every other issue thing, but unlike the first two volumes, the storyline was fairly unified, so it made it confusing if you read 4 after 3, as I did. There was a lot of “oh, that’s why that person was upset in volume 3” kind of stuff going on. The story was fine, and I liked wonder woman’s innocent character, but the story also seemed to skip forwards and backwards in time? Or did it? I’m not exactly sure. Regardless, Diana’s calm and joy anchored the story as always. But did I mention it was confusing?

The artwork alternates between quite good and almost childish. Pretty inconsistent. Overall, I enjoyed it, but hoped for much better. Maybe with volume 5...

Thank you DC for giving me an egalley in exchange for a review!

I really liked how the author explored the reasons for the villain's actions.
