Mark Adams perfectly captures the tones and rhythms of the Machu Picchu, Cusco, and Sacred Valley area, for all the good and the bad. I was fortunate enough to spend three months in the area a decade or so ago. His writing brought back so many memories and made me want to take a reunion tour. Along the way he shares some of the emotional and physical saga of a middle aged man embarking on adventure travel for the first time in his life and teaches readers something about Peruvian history and the follies of the North American and European explorers from centuries past.

I would have found this book tedious had I not been to at least some of the places mentioned-- the city of Cusco, Sachsaywaman, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu itself, but having a frame of reference, this book helped my week-long trip to the region in 2012 make a lot more sense and have way more meaning. I'm probably not up for the author's first backpacking journey off the beaten path, but I'm inspired to go back to Peru and hike the Inca Trail someday.

A fun travel memoir mixed with the history and controversy of the man who “discovered” Machu Picchu. The mix of the author’s personal experience exploring Machu Picchu and the surrounding area with the experience of the man who is associated with the most recent discovery of the area, is cool way to bring the reader along for the journey. The author’s experience is entertaining, he being a city person trying to have an explorer experience was funny as well as touching. This is an easy nonfiction read, definitely worth the time.

This was a great piece of travel writing. I loved the history and the amateur adventure story combined. He created great characters as well!
