This book was WAY funnier than I thought it’d be. I’m thinking about taking a trip to Peru and visiting Machu Picchu and this was some nice background and look and feel. There are surprisingly few fiction books/memoirs about or taking place in Peru. At least in English.

An excellent listen if you are planning on visiting Machu Picchu in Peru. Gives modern and historical perspective on geographic, historical, cultural and political happenings in Peru. Having the narrator pronounce all of the difficult (for me) names was very helpful. I particularly enjoyed listening to the narrative regarding the author who as a travel adventure editor had never really adventured until he decided to follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham, the explorer who "discovered" the ruins of Machu Picchu. His Australian guide is awesome, and they learn a lot together. Historical perspective is interspersed throughout the narrative. If you listen to this story with plans of taking a day train to the site, you will probably change your mind and decide to hike the Inca Trail to experience the many meaningful sites along the way.

I picked this up because I was in the mood for a travel book. Adams switches between talking about Hiram Bingham (who was one of the first westerners to see Machu Picchu) and his own trip to Machu Picchu. I alternated between wanting to hike there very badly, and being reminded of why I don't particularly enjoy the outdoors. It does seem fascinating, though.
I've always wanted to see Machu Picchu and this just made me want to walk the Inca Trail to get there. A little too many details about things I wasn't as interested in, but the audio had a really good reader that bumped up the enjoyment.
Likeable narrator. Interesting subject. Sturdy but uncompelling storytelling. Still stoked my desire to trek through Peru.

I never really thought twice about Machu Picchu before this book but am now itching to visit one day! The book was extremely entertaining and the author was able to simplify the historical aspects in an easy to digest way. Throughly enjoyed it!
