We finished! So happy... we had intended to finish this before our trip to Peru, but we did a month and a half afterwards instead. I'm not sure if this is the best book to read to prepare for a trip to Machu Picchu (we didn't read any others), I don't know if it would have influenced us enough to change our itinerary (we did not walk the Inca Trail). It's educational though, focusing on Bingham and the author's experiences with an entourage trekking around the area old school-like.

A great look at Bingham and his 'discovery' of Machu Picchu, interlinked with Mark Adams' own travels following in his footsteps with some funny moments along the wauly.

Much better than other examples of modern adventures in Peru that I've read.

This book was great prep for my trek to Machu Picchu. While it centers on the author's travels throughout the sacred valley region and the history of Hiram Bingham's "discovery" (discovery is used very ironically here) of ruins in the region, it gave me a really strong background ahead of visiting the city.

This book strikes a balance between adventure tale, informative historical account, government intrigue, and topics of race class and oppression that are important background for Americans wherever they travel.
