I wanted to like this book, but it did not keep my attention for more than a few pages at a time. As a result, I slogged through it for nearly four months (my online library account dutifully renewing it again and again) before finally skimming over the last few sections and gleefully shoving it in the book return slot, enraptured to move onto better books.
Kind of makes me want to drop everything and hike to Machu Picchu. I love how the author blended his own travel/adventure story with the history of the Incas and Spanish colonialism, as well as with the more recent history of Hiram Bingham's various expeditions. By the end of the book I felt like I'd been on a great adventure with the author AND I had learned a lot. Great combination.
