So excited for our trip to Machu Picchu after reading this. Will definitely be passing it around to family members before we leave.

I'm trying to get back into travel writing, and I started reading this one a long time ago but never finished it. What I loved about this one was that on top of being a travel memoir, it was also a history of both Bingham's story, with a sprinkling of Inca history and cosmology. The chapters were balanced well and although it took me a few days to get through I really did feel as though I was fully consuming it. There was always something interesting to read.

Loved reading this book to get me even more excited about a trip to Peru later this year. While long winded at times, Mark
Adams shares his experience of his adventures through this beautiful country, musing on his research and many theories along the way. It was a deep dive into the last century plus (and origin theories from 1500s) of action in the Incas sacred land and monuments

An enjoyable read about Mark Adams adventures in Peru retracing Hiram Bingham’s journey to find ‘lost’ cities of the Incas. I first read The Last Days if the Incas by Kim MacQuarrie which is a fuller historical account about the Spanish conquest in Peru and really set the stage for Adams book.
An excellent author writes about subjects for which he clearly has deep affection. I'd love this book even if Machu Picchu and the Incas and early 1900s exploration weren't also fascinating. I highly recommend it, but, be warned, you'll want to go to Peru before you're done.
Mark Adam's fun adventure and history novel sweeps you away. His journalistic roots show and the book can cause any reader to suddenly have a love of history. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this one so much that I plowed through it in one weekend. A nice mix of history and personal narrative, and manages to convey the feel of the Andes without resorting to caricature or hyperbole. I particularly appreciated the author's British-style self-mocking humor about his deficiencies as an adventurer.

It took me a long time to read this book, because it is one of those books that I re-read passages, look at the map, consult a reference, look on line for more information. In other words, I studied it like a text. I am hoping to go to Machu Picchu and would highly recommend this book to anyone who is also planning that trip. It's a very enjoyable book, just consider it reading it, a learning experience, as you will delve into HIstory, Geography, and Astronomy during your read. Enjoy!
