Great read on some of the historic events of the Inca Empire, mixed with the conversational adventures of Mark Adams. Would highly recommend for anyone traveling to Peru.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Part history, part adventure, part anthropological. The author is intelligent, has a deep reverence and appreciation for the beautiful AND the truly sublime, and he made me laugh out loud more than once. This book also prompted me to buy a couple more on Machu Picchu, and I wouldn't mind getting an opportunity to hike up there myself someday. See how inspiring it was?
As someone who lived for several years in Peru, I found this to be a rather funny look into Machu Picchu from an outsider. A good mix of history and what MP feels and looks like nowadays
Really wonderful blend of travel writing and history lesson. Adams’s sense of wonder and humor kept me reading
I wanted to visit Machu Picchu before I read this. Now I absolutely MUST go. Just as soon as I get in shape for hiking the Inca trail.
Reading this now. Makes me want to go back to Peru. And, for the first time, to Machu Picchu.
An excellent travelogue book and great summer reading material. Informative and evocative without ever being anything less than entertaining. Good stuff.

It isn't the genre I usually read, but it was great prep for my trip to machu picchu. 3.5 stars
I kept waiting for this to get funnier or more interesting. I got a few interesting Hiram Bingham facts. The people and places involved offered every opportunity for a riveting and hilarious story but the author just wasn't able to stick the landing on the presentation.
