I’ve been a fan of Caitlin Doughty for a while, watching her on YouTube, learning about the death industry and The Good Death so reading about her beginnings in the industry was pretty interesting.

Part biography, part history and I guess part self help book, Smoke gets In Your Eyes, is a frank exploration of the American Death Industry, how it became to be, how a few other cultures deal with death and how it, as an industry, can be better.

Death is often a taboo topic in our western culture but in this book there is a lot of honesty included which makes you realise it shouldn’t be. There is also a lot of humour too which I guess you need when dealing with an industry linked to so much sadness.

This book is however a little dated now as things have come a long way already (especially in the authors own life and experiences) so the context of its publication date is probably important to note.

I look forward to reading her other works and would highly recommend you check out her YouTube channel too.

A great way to make a difficult subject easier to talk and read about. Death is a part of life. And talking about it like you’re discussing what you are gonna eat for dinner is a great way to start the conversation.

The whole thing was very interesting, but “The Art of Dying” was something else- haunting, poignant, and uplifting.
