Harrowing! Child turns to sex work to pay bills thanks to deadbeat family. Horrifyingly inspired by true events. NB ACAB! 3🚔

This story doesnt have a neatly wrapped up hapoy ending that promises that the bad guys go to jail and the good guys get to heal.  It’s a realistic depiction of marginalized lives that fall outside the purview of American justice, yet it shows that even amongst the despair and pain, there are moments of love and joy that matter, even if they dont triumph over injustice.

Absolutely harrowing. I can't believe the sophistication and depth of Mottley's writing on a project she started when she was just 17. I can't wait to keep reading her work in the future. As for this specific work, I think it's such a testament to empathy that it should be even more widely read. Incredible debut.

This book burns with a righteous fury and deeply affecting pathos. A searing indictment of systemic racism and classism, it centers a teenage girl who turns to survival sex work only to find herself taken advantage of by those who, in theory, are supposed to protect her. Also the prose is stunning with Mottley's experience as a poet paying off greatly. Additionally, it's written in first person, and the way the protagonist's voice shifts throughout the story from shut down and survival focused, to making room for her anger and grief, is just stunning.
