A great and playful look into the amazing world of Mathematics. Talked about the history of the subject as well as it's many amazing and interesting applications.
As with another book I read "Sync", Strogatz has a leisurely approach to some difficult topics that makes the reading both enjoyable and also edifying. Recommended.
This was an easy read and a nice refresher for those who wish to become acquainted or reacquainted with maths. If you are looking for something more substantive, you may want to pass this one by.
I enjoyed reading The Joy of x but it was too short and didn't go into enough depth in many subjects. It opens up some highly interesting math in a way that is very accessible to anyone.

Well, logging this book will pretty much seal my fate as a nerd. However, this was a good read and gave a brief history of the big math ideas in consumable form: Mobius Strips, set theory, Snell's law, relationship triangles, etc... I think my family will be happy I burned through this quickly so I stop talking about math problems at the dinner table.
Here's my favorite line(s) from the book, because it relates to some of the things I'm thinking about at work.
"But battling obstacles can give rise to great beauty - so much so that in art, and in math, it's often more fruitful to impose constraints on ourselves. The same is true of all math that's been created to help you find the shortest way from here to there when you can't take the easy way out." -page 236
You should go read this book.

A brilliant book for those that have been scared or intimidated by anything more abstract than an integral.

√(-1) ♥ math.
Sorry, I couldn't resist!
This book puts me in awe of how little I really know about math at even the most basic level. And it also makes me sad to think so few teachers present math in such an engaging way. Well done.
