Nice into to different mathematical studies including Linear algebra and group Theory. I did read the author's blog post in the NY Times long back.
I read lot of pages to my daughter. The author has an interesting way of explaining basic math concepts. I never had a mathematics teacher in my student life like this author.

I remembered enjoying a couple of Strogatz's columns in the New York Times. I was hoping there would be a bit more depth in the book than in the articles, but there was not. I was definitely not the intended audience for this book though.
I really enjoyed this. Strogatz is really effective at mixing the history of mathematics and the practical applications of different mathematical fields into his explanations of the nuts and bolts of specific mathematical concepts. I did not find that his "real life" examples--attempts to make the math he discusses pertinent to daily tasks of experiences--was as interesting or as illuminating. But I certainly learned a lot, and I am very excited to read his book on calculus.
Jeśli nigdy nie lubiliście matematyki a rozwiązywanie czegokolwiek więcej niż najprostsze z zadań przyprawiało Was o ból głowy, to książka ta... niewiele w Waszym podejściu do tego przedmiotu zmieni. Trudno odmówić autorowi tego, że próbuje w sposób możliwie interesujący i obrazowy wyłożyć o co chodzi z wszystkimi tymi całkami, rachunkiem różniczkowym i innymi rzeczami, które w okresie szkolnym sprawiały, że człowiek budził się spocony w środku nocy, ale prędzej czy później wszystkie jego starania trafiają na mur w postaci braku (chęci) zrozumienia w postaci osoby niżej podpisanego, który tak jak kilkadziesiąt lat temu gapi się na przedstawione wzory, jak wól na malowane wrota. Po cichu liczyłem, że po wielu książka ta zmieni nieco mój sposób patrzenia na matematykę. Cóż, może dzięki Panu Strogatzowi patrzę na nią nieco bardziej przyjaźnie, ale poza odświeżeniem kilku mniej lub bardziej pożytecznych informacji z tego przedmiotu, przypomniałem sobie też dlaczego wcześniej jej tak bardzo nie lubiłem.
Skomplikowana sprawa z tą książką, muszę przyznać. Dlatego polecę ją przede wszystkim ludziom w wieku szkolnym i... nauczycielom matematyki. Tym pierwszym może łatwiej będzie przebrnąć i zrozumieć istotę najważniejszych zagadnień z tej dziedziny a pedagogom może służyć, jako cenna pomoc w przygotowaniu ciekawszych i bardziej przystępnych wykładów na lekcje przedmiotu.

A decent overview of a bunch of increasingly complex math concepts. The book is well written, with some really compelling examples and good explanations of some deep concepts. I did feel it was a bit too brief, however, as some of the topics cannot be explained adequately in the space given.
You wouldn’t know it, but maths permeates everything we do and touch. Your smartphone would not be able to operate without maths, nor would the internet. You couldn’t buy anything risk free if we didn’t have the primes. Things as unlikely as the correct time to flip a mattress, the number of people to date before settling down, the best path from A to B, that if you look hard enough you can see sine waves everywhere all have some element of maths in them.
He does manage to take a subject that many people find confusing and make it manageable and understandable and possibly a tiny bit less scary. There is the odd subject that will make non mathematical readers blanch a bit (it involves quadratic equations), but you’ll be pleased to hear that there are not many subjects that he cannot clearly illuminate. It is packed with photos, picture and diagrams to help illustrate each of the short punchy subjects. Overall a good introduction to maths for those who need to brush up a little when staring at their children’s homework in a bemused fashion.
