I have to sort out my thoughts; I highlighted a lot in here and took my time reading it to savor it, but couldn’t help myself from tearing through the last half. This is a must-read for trans allies and I also found it strangely comforting that I related to a lot of the details about childhood trauma.

Elliot is a deeply intelligent and creative person and I am so thankful he wrote this book. It’s not in perfect chronological order and feels less burdensome because of it, a style reminiscent of following conversational stories of thought patterns that make reflective connections across time as you go. It’s an easy read but also a heavily impactful one (not an easy feat). Such a good reminder that we never know each other’s inner worlds while we live in a society designed to oppress them. I just loved this book.

I love EP and appreciate his vulnerability in this piece. However, the majority of the novel was challenging. Pedophelia, non consensual physical advances, parental abuse/neglect, parental abandonment/narcissism… yowza was this a potluck of triumph and pain. Not what I had in mind going into it, but I’m grateful for the read. It was really nice being able to trust his account of things so easily; he’s able to hold the good and the imperfect about himself and his choices so earnestly and mindfully compassionate that it was clear the work he’s done. Bravo for lovely people
