Overall it was an imaginative and well written book. I felt the plot lagged in the beginning as the characters were set up, and so, I struggled to get into the story until about the halfway mark. It would’ve been fun to explore more of the worlds mentioned without the “bad man is after me” plot device. So much material that could’ve been explored but then again that would’ve changed the book entirely, so I understand why it wasn’t done.

Maybe this says something about me, but the last “dear reader” section felt a little too earnest. So maybe I missed a deeper point to this book? My book club will discuss this one, so I hope to learn what I missed.

I can't believe I am finally done! This book is excellent. However, it is not a fast read. The author does a wonderful job of building up the drama and emotion. I wept through most of the last two chapters. It was a difficult book for me. I can absolutely imagine someone telling me that this is their favorite book and that they reread it every year. It won't be me, though. The main character doesn't have a lot of agency, which is one of the themes of the book. It is important. It isn't for me, though, at least, not more than once.

Took me a little while to get into this book but really glad I stuck with it, the story was solid and the writing was a joy. There are some parts of the book I wouldn’t enjoy revisiting, but the overall theme is timeless. So, not quite something I would read again any time soon, but not a book I would feel okay parting with quite yet.

Would love a follow up novel centered on Jane!

Gloriously wordsmithed, following familiar themes to new destinations. Wonderful, vivid, memorable characters. Best and most satisfying example of a book within a book that I can remember reading.
