Artificial Friend observes Humans.

A book that both intrigued and frustrated. I don't know where the running length disappeared to. For some of this I couldn't tell you what happened, though a few key scenes stick out sharply in my memory.

Saying that, I wouldn't say this does not work on audiobook - it does, the narrator voices Klara well, but I found the book quite slow and it felt at times that the same messages could have been put across in a novella.

Klara's voice came across strongly as she observes the world and potential future families for herself in the store. Her special skill is observation, and she is eventually selected by a human family as companion to the daughter for this ability.

The book goes on to show us how AFs are treated by humans, sometimes with dignity and respect, and at other times as nothing more than unfeeling robots. Eventually, the point of Klara being there is revealed, and then my ears pricked up again.

Klara is of course, an AF, and as such it was hard to warm to her. The story itself has been covered before in film and literature, though there were moments that stood out. I can't say I hold this in the same regard as Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go, both of which I would consider classics.

Slow-moving, this may suit the reader more on a paper basis, but it may just not have been right for me.

With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.
