A stunning fast paced witch based story about 2 brothers & a Crimson Moth saving witches, deep layers of love between them & not seem to understanding who was behind the blood deaths. Felt so sorry for Gideon Sharpe...can't wait to read to follow-up duo book The Rebel Witch.

I don't know why this took me SO LONG to finish. (Am I still going through a book hangover from The Favorites? Maybe). I'd read a few pages every night but would catch myself not paying attention and I couldn't get sucked in enough to read 100 pages at a time. I finally switched to the audiobook so I could listen while doing other tasks, and that seemed to work better for me—I finally binged the end. But I missed a super important reveal and had to go back to find it in my Kindle version anyway, lol.

What worked for me:
- Truly enjoyed the complicated concept of the romance here
- Rune felt unique to me and I enjoyed her arc
- The ending was strong and makes me excited to read the second book

What didn’t work for me:
- I wasn't super emotionally invested. I always hope to have a stronger reaction to what's happening, especially all the drama in the end
- The time period. Oh my word. So we don't have cars. We do have telegrams (that are SUPER verbose and written like text messages, not telegrams). Main character wears gowns but lace bralette underneath. Like she was ALWAYS wearing a lace bralette specifically. I can vibe with a fantasy world, but this one really took me out of it. I also apologize to the Book Huddle group because I asked about Heartless Hunter's setting in a thread about a modern rom com. Some of them thought they'd missed the telegrams in that one. NOPE! But I just need more of a commitment to a time period to really submerge myself in the atmosphere.

Recommendation:
If you like complicated romantic relationships mixed with strategy, and you're a romantic fantasy fan (note I'm not calling this romantasy because it's not a capital-R Romance). I will definitely read the sequel even with the issues I had.

Spice level: There is very obvious sex happening here even though body parts aren't all spelled out graphically. We have on-page making out, nudity, and touching, with actual sex fading to black at the last minute. I'd probably say 16+ for this one but maybe I'm a prude.
Graphic: Witchcraft, blood (seriously, all the blood), violence, murder, gun violence, toxic relationship
Moderate: Sexual assault (off page but discussed, and forced undressing on page), sexual content
Minor: Does drop a few F-bombs. Even if this is YA, I'd consider it upper high school. All of the above was fine for me as an adult.

With witches, witch hunters and plenty of enemies to lovers tension to go with the cat and mouse dynamics, this was such an incredible read. I honestly can’t believe it took me soo long to pick up!

The prose was decadently lush and the dual POV characters (Rune and Gideon)  were fabulously complex in a flawed, morally grey kind of way that I found utterly unputdownable.

I loved the sharp tongued Rune, who uses her flirtatious socialite persona to hide her blood soaked alter ego, The Crimson Moth. An infamous vigilante (and resistance fighter) using her magic to save fellow witches from imprisonment and execution.

However, it was her emotional complexity as she tries to overcome the guilt surrounding her (witch) grandmother’s execution (and the role she played in it) that kept me soo invested.

Well that, and the sizzlingly addictive,  slow-burn chemistry she has with witch hunter, Gideon. Our morally grey (and brooding) second POV character whose lethal precision at detecting (and capturing) witches took me a while to warm to. But peering behind his callous mask, (to the loss that has shaped him) really helped me to understand him (and his need for vengeance) a little better.

Plus the scorching intensity of their enemies to lovers dynamics—and the conflicted feelings they both face was soo deliciously swoon worthy! And THAT ending! I need to grab a copy of Rebel Witch immediately 🔥

There’s not much else I can add without spoilers. So I’ll just say, this was a nuanced, plot twisty and politically charged tale of identity, grief, vengeance, survival and love. That fans of witchy Romantasy or the Serpent & Dove series should definitely consider checking out.

I was expecting this to be good, based on what little I’d seen about it, but I’d been in a reading slump for a while and didn’t expect to love this book so much! Is this the best book ever written? No. Was it a book I fully enjoyed and would gladly reread? Yes!! I loved the characters, I loved the relationships, I loved the plot twist (even if it was a little predictable). The half star I knocked off was just because I felt like the inner monologues of the main characters got a little repetitive, but overall this was such a great read for me!

First reading of this genre so it’s hard to rate for me as I don’t have comparisons

The first quarter of the book, I was very distracted and couldn’t really connect with it, especially when
at 10% of the book he already suspects her

But then I wanted to know more and read everything in one day.

The writing felt good (although I read otherwise in other reviews), the characters are well described and have some layers in their personality, which opens to character growth or flaws.

I was torn between
Alex and Gideon, I feel Alex was too quickly labeled as the too safe choice, I thought it could have developed into something really nice and deep but we were lead to think it would only have been like love between siblings. The relationship with Gideon seems more core shattering for her but it also still seems to me like the passion of early stages so I’m still not fully sold

I hadn’t guessed the plot twist but
I found strange that Verity was not marked as witch sibling m/aidant or something like that because of her history and apparent lack of support to the regime.

The settings were nice although I could not guess in which kind of era we should be (?) and maybe expected to be awed by more magic features

I want to read book 2 to see what happens but I hope it will less graphic in violence because it was quite hard at some points

"You are everything I thought you were," she told him.

"And you," said Gideon, voice quiet, "are nothing at all like I imagined you'd be."
